Accounting career benefits are deferred
Patience Young CPA...the benefits of an accounting career are deferred π π²
In a world of instant gratification, the CPA payoff is a slow burn.
It's well documented, the CPA exam is hard and requires extra education. The profession itself is plagued by long work days and often mundane work.
π Even after getting your letters, you can expect moderate starting salaries that pale in comparison to other professions.
π₯ But like Mr.Miyagi told a young Ralph Macchio in the Karate Kidβ¦"Patience Young Grasshopper".
Daniel Son is upset that he's not seeing the benefits of his training. He's putting in countless hours of hard work, but the work itself is mundane (cleaning a car).
Wax on, Wax off. Why would anyone sign up for this grunt work?
πͺ The benefits of that work are not obvious to the young grasshopper, but his years of grunt work payoff later when he's ready to Win the big fight.
π£ For CPA's, the real benefits start to kick in about 5 years into your accounting career.
You've been promoted a few times, you're overseeing the work of others, your focus is on the important stuff, you're well respected and most importantly you're making bank. You're a hot commodity in the business world.
β² You did your time and it's paying off.
Whether you stay in public, rise through the ranks in industry or pivot out of a pure accounting role. Your future is bright and you have the CPA credential behind your name to thank for that.
There are real benefits to getting your CPA, but you have to be patient. Older millennials and the generations of workers that came before them, understood this.
The youngest professionals today want those payoffs much sooner and they don't necessarily want to grind it out for 5 years to realize the benefits. I canβt blame them.
The CPA is worth it. But there is a level of patience required and an expectation that you "do your time". Only then do you experience all the benefits the CPA has to offer.
I get it. In a world of instant gratification, the CPA won't appeal to those looking for quick wins and a stroll down easy street.
π£ But your career is a long journey. For those willing to make some early sacrifices and play the long game, the benefits of getting your CPA are very real.
