Accounting’s Serial Problem

Accounting has a serial problem 🥣 👀

Here's how it starts:

◽ An extra year of education
◽ Leading to more student debt
◽ For the opportunity to study for 4 exams
◽ To land a job where you work long hours
◽ For lackluster pay

👉 It's a serial problem 👈

But there’s another barrier to entry for the accounting profession…the Image Problem

💣 40% of accountants believe the negative accounting stereotypes are a real barrier to entry. They point to the perception that accountants are stuffy, boring number crunchers that lack creativity.

Ouch! Calling all accountants, Accountancy Age put out a call to action:

—--------------------------

“By perpetuating the stereotype of accountants as introverted number-crunchers, the profession risks dissuading the next generation of accountants from pursuing careers in accounting.

As such, accountants must challenge these misconceptions and highlight the diverse talents and contributions of accounting professionals to dispel outdated stereotypes once and for all.”

—--------------------------

The image problem is indeed a big contributor to the shortage.

It’s also an area where I don’t see the AICPA making much progress.
